AEI tags are a form of RFID system used by the rail industry. Fixed readers on the side of the track read RFID tags on the rolling stock to determine the manifest, speed and direction. APCI Maintained AEI track side readers around Australia over a number of years however the technology relied on fixed X.25 leased phone lines. Since the customer controllers were not able to be upgraded APCI was able to design an innovative method to provide a updated cost effective communications solution.
APCI upgraded the communications network to run on 3G while maintaining legacy hardware. This was achieved by writing custom firmware in 3G routers to emulate X.25 network. The end result was a low cost reliable communications infrastructure.
